Diet for Urinary stones

Urinary Stones (calculi) are hard masses which form in the urinary tract and it may cause pain, bleeding, or an infection or block of the flow of urine.

Recommended Food for Urinary Stones

Plenty of Fluids

Drink at least 12 glasses of water (2-3 liter).  Use soft water for drinking instead of hard water.If hard water-boil sufficiently before drinking. It prevents stone formation in body.

Coconut Water

 Coconut water is rich in potassium and magnesium; hence it helps to prevent stone formation in renal system.

Vegetables

Carrots

Carrots are rich in mineral and vitamin A, which act as stone inhibitors.

Karela

Karela are rich in minerals, it is helps to stone inhibitors

Fruits and Juices

Banana

Banana is rich in vitamin B6, which breakdown oxalic acid in the body thereby  it prevents stone formation.

Lemon

Lemon rich in citrates and vitamin C. Citrate acts on the calcium oxalate which prevent stone formation

Watermelon

Watermelon rich in water and potassium,  which helps in stone formation.

Pineapple Juice

Pineapple contains an enzyme which helps to breakdown fibrins, which prevent renal stone formation.

Oats

Oats is rich in stone inhibitors, which helps in prevent stone formation

Rice bran

Rice bran contains phytates which helps to prevent the stone formation.

Not Recommended Food for Urinary Stones

Vegetables

Palak and chaulai

These vegetables are rich in oxalate which can lead to urinary stones

Cauliflower, Brinjal and Mashroom

These vegetables are rich in uric acid / purine, which causes stone formation

Fruits and Juices

Chicoo and Grapes

These fruits has high in oxalate content which can lead to urinary stones.

Pumpkin

 Pumpkin is rich in uric acid / purine content, which causes stone formation.

Straw berries and Raspberries

These fruits are rich sources of oxalate which can lead to urinary stone.

Non-Vegetarian Food

Mutton, Chicken, Fish, Egg

These are rich sources of uric acid / purine content, which causes urinary stones

Cashew Nuts

Cashew nuts are rich in oxalate which can lead to urinary stones

Chocolate / Cocoa, Chocolate drink mixes, Tea and coffee

These are rich in oxalate content which can lead to urinary stone

Carbonated drink / Foods

These are high in salt and sugar

Kidney Stones

  • Calcium Or Oxalate Stones
  • Uric Acid Stones
  • Struvite Stones
  • Cystine Stones

Diet for Specific Stones

Calcium or Oxalate Stones

  • Drink 10-12 glasses of water every day.
  • Limit calcium foods like dairy products
  • Limit high oxalate foods like colas, peanuts, chocolates etc.
  • Do not overuse antacids.

Uric Acid Stones

  • Drink 10-12 glasses of water every day.
  • Limit high purine foods like meat, vegetables, bear, wine etc.

Struvite Stones

  • Drink 10-12 glasses of water every day.
  • It caused by infections.
  • You must follow your antibiotic regimen
  • Drink lot of water

Cystine Stones

  • Drink 10-12 glasses of water every day.
  • Limit intake of fish (Its high in methionine)
